Many studies have been done all showing the positive effects and benefits in keeping a workout log. A workout log allows you to see progression and constantly strive for more weight, reps, etc... By constantly maintaining stress and placing a higher workload on the muscle, a workout log forces you to adapt to your needs whether they be strength, size, endurance, or a mix of all three.
A workout log will also easily allow you to notice any sticking points - muscles that are "stuck" lagging behind your other muscles and need to be focused on more - and change your workout accordingly. In addition to sticking points there are plateaus to overcome in training where your strength will not increase. However, by keeping a log you can see if there were things that had helped you in the past with this same plateau. You may notice that you always do shoulder press after bench press and suddenly by switching things up, you've overcome this obstacle.
Keeping track of how much weight you moved for how many reps also enables you to keep your workouts realistic. No longer can you go lift weights and deceive yourself into thinking that you are getting stronger. With the numbers in front of you, you can keep things realistic which is critical to meeting your fitness needs.
Ever have one of those days where there's no motivation to go the gym? Well, with a workout log you can flip through the pages, see how your strength has increased and become more motivated. Nothing is more encouraging to see how far your workouts have come since day 1.
